The Pedalshift Project 180: S24Os for the Busy Bike Camper

Fall means a lot of riding on the C&O, but lately I find I don’t have the time for a big through ride. So what’s a time-strapped bicycle tourist to do? On this episode we revisit S24Os – a great way to get some adventure when life, work, family, whatever prevents a longer trip.

This is another in-the-field recording of my thoughts on S24Os while ON an S24O. Super meta, and it has the accompanying wind and other soundscapes added on. If you like this, stick around because in a couple of weeks we’ll have another episode on the C&O with a decidedly canine twist.

One last thing!  This trip has a secret mission that cleans up the end of Tour Journals Vol. 16 in a couple of fun ways… let’s get rolling!

Can a 501c3 Advocate for Impeachment of a Federal Office Holder?

My piece on 501(c)(3)s and impeachment was published in Nonprofit Quarterly today… first para:

On September 24, 2019, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, prompting a national debate some 501c3s may wish to join. While the IRS gives no direct guidance on what 501c3 public charities can do or say to support or oppose impeachment, there are related laws that speak to possible risks.

Read more at Nonprofit Quarterly!

Useless sidebar… I strongly prefer using parenthesis when describing entities from the tax code (i.e. “501(c)(3)s” not 501c3s) but I recognize this is a hard-G/soft-G GIF argument I will never win. Just wanted to be clear NQ uses the non-parenthesis style, which is totally fine even though it makes me cringe a little inside. That said, I’m grateful they chose to publish my article because it was timely and quasi-interesting in my mind. Like I said… useless sidebar.

The Pedalshift Project 179: Bike Touring With Baby on Board

The Dittus family (aka #dirtbagfamily2019) grew by one recently, and there was no way they weren’t taking him on an adventure before too long. Tag along and learn all about  bike touring with baby on board!

The Journal: Bike Touring with Baby on Board

On this episode we chat with Adele and Brock Dittus, whom you’ve heard on the show before! This is the adventurousy outdoorsy couple that have let us learn all about their past bike tours. You may also know Brock from back episodes of The Sprocket Podcast where he’s the current producer and host emeritus.

But here’s the thing… they had a son recently! And that kind of changed a lot of things, but they didn’t let it stop them from slapping a helmet on him and taking him out on a super bikey adventure. I think this is a trip that will get you parental types stoked to get your kids to join you on tour. Tons of great advice from Adele and Brock on this one!

Pics of the #dirtbagfamily2019 plus a pic of Brock you cannot unsee:

The Pedalshift Project 174: Bicycle Touring Etiquette

We all want to do the right thing, hopefully, and within any community there’s an unwritten code of conduct for proper behavior so we can all get along. On this episode, we cover some of those rules of bicycle touring etiquette!

The Journal: Bicycle Touring Etiquette

Thanks to a listener for this recommendation… I’ve managed to lose the email or message from social media that has it

Camping

  • Watch your spacing
  • For shared campsites, saying hello and asking if it’s cool to camp there
  • Assess your neighbor’s desire to chat and respect it
  • Don’t brag about your exploits – it’s a bad look
  • Be open with information that can help others, but don’t force opinions and suggestions on people
  • Share stuff if you have extra
  • Respect quiet hours
  • Respect late sleepers as you take off

Leave no trace

  • Think ahead – reduce the amount of packaging and garbage before you roll
  • Always have a garbage bag – doesn’t matter what it is
  • Pack all garbage out and even take some that’s not yours
  • If there are no bathroom facilities learn backcountry techniques (cat hole, etc.) and please respect water bodies.

Speed + Passing

  • Some trails have a speed limit – respect that, particularly in more crowded areas
  • Many trails and some laws require bells for passing – know before you go
  • Use bells or call “on your left” boldly but (please!) in a friendly way
  • Do it every time even if you’re frustrated that the runners are wearing headphones and don’t hear you!
  • It’s so easy to get frustrated, but remember we’re sharing the trails with others
  • Avoid lecturing other trail users, especially if you’re a visitor

Be cool

Respect boundaries with people you meet and other tourists.
Watch your consumption.
You’re an ambassador… act like one!
